A quick note on “Have I Been Pwned?”
First off, what the heck is “Pwned”? Like a lot of Internet slang, the term “pwned” is pretty silly. It is likely just a typo of the word “owned” and would be typically used in a smack-talk kind of way, particularly in the context of online video games. In other words, if you beat someone badly at a game, you owned them. Or in this case, “pwned” them. (Told ya it was pretty silly!)
Goofy name aside, the work they do is very serious and 100% legitimate. They are one of the leading resources on the topic of data breaches and if you search on Google for “data breach lookup” they will likely be right at the top of the results.
